Vacation Milestones
Milestones are used to determine how much Vacation an employee accrues based on their tenure. Making changes to milestones will cause all users' vacation to be recalculated (overnight).

Think of each start and end year pair as a bucket that each employee will fall into based on their start date. The accrual hours column dictates the number of vacation hours a user in that bucket will accrue within a full calendar year. The start years are read only and are always one more than the prior end year. The first start year is always 0.

Each employee falls into a bucket in the vacation milestone table based on their start date. Lets take the following vacation milestone table as an example:
Hierarchy
Example 1: The user just started and falls into the 0-4 year bucket. They will accrue vacation at a rate of the accrual hours of 80 divided by the number of days in the year. They will only accrue for days after their start date. Because they started this year, they will not reach the full 80 hours.

Example 2: The user is in their 7th year. They will accrue at 120 hours divided by the total number of days in the year for a total of 120 hours by the end of the year.

Example 3: The user is in their 5th year. During this milestone year the user will start to accrue at the 120 hour rate when their anniversary date passes. Before their anniversary date they will accrue vacation at the 80 hour rate. So their total vacation for the year will be between 80 and 120 hours. The final number of hours depends on their anniversary date.
User's Vacation
This section holds all the vacation data specific to an individual. From here you can see the vacation balances YTD and year end for everyone.
Vacation Adjustments
Adjustments are for situations where an individual user needs to have more vacation than the vacation milestone dictates. For example, if your company allows for carrying over 20 hours of unused vacation you can add any unused vacation by employee here.

The pro-rated option allows for the adjustment balance to be available in full (unchecked) at the start of the year, or to be accrued throughout the year (checked).

Vacation balances are updated nightly, when vacation is entered, and when an adjustment is added to the user's vacation.
